Dirigo Talks, a new community-driven speaker series in southern Maine, is bringing together local experts to spark downtown revitalization. Leaders from Heart of Biddeford, Saco Spirit, OOB365 and Engine will present their ideas to revamp downtowns, support creative small businesses and bring together communities in 15 minute talks. The inaugural event begins at 7:30pm on February 27 at Engine in downtown Biddeford.
The team behind Dirigo Talks, plans to host numerous free events each year, grouping speakers to common themes. Leaders from businesses, non-profits, politics, and the arts will be invited to share their big ideas at intimate venues. Presentations will be recorded so others can view them later online.
Dirigo Talks was started by Luke Nielson, a young author from Saco. Nielson saw great digital success with the release of his book Connected Growth last year, but realized he also missed a valuable opportunity. “When you’re trying to inspire meaningful action, being face-to-face still truly matters.” This belief is pushing him to create more opportunities for influential community dialogue.
Leading up to the event, the speakers work with William Hoyle, Program Director for Dirigo Talks. Hoyle, a popular blogger and charismatic speaker, uses his communication skills to help the speakers find the best way to tell their story to an outside audience.
Dirigo Talks is a project by the Saco Bay Center for Civic Engagement, a non-profit launched last month that aims to foster a lifelong commitment to active citizenship and social responsibility in the area. Nielson serves on the board of the SBCCE.
